Timber Casement Window Restoration In Spaxton, Somerset

This timber window restoration project in Spaxton, Somerset involved the extensive repair and refurbishment of traditional timber casement windows. Once the failed paintwork and previous coverings were removed, severe decay was exposed across the window cills, lower frame sections and the bases of several mullions.

Rather than replacing the complete windows, the decayed timber was removed and new repair sections were formed to restore their strength and original profiles. The frames and opening casements were then carefully prepared, repaired and fully repainted to provide lasting protection while retaining the character of the existing windows

The condition of the original timber casement windows

Before restoration, the timber casement windows were affected by extensive hidden decay. Once the failed paint and previous coverings were removed, large sections of the cills and lower frame were found to be soft, fractured and no longer structurally sound. Decay had also spread into the bases of several vertical mullions.

Although the damage was severe, much of the original frame and the opening casements remained suitable for restoration. Removing only the failed timber allowed the sound original joinery to be retained while the damaged lower sections were rebuilt properly

Restoring the timber casement windows in Spaxton

The timber casement windows were carefully stripped back so that the full extent of the decay could be assessed. Failed sections of the original cills, lower frames and mullion bases were cut out, while all sound timber was retained wherever possible.

New timber repair sections and replacement cills were formed to match the original profiles before being securely fitted into the existing frames. The original window hardware was also carefully restored and refitted. The windows were then prepared, primed and fully repainted, restoring their strength, appearance and protection without replacing the complete window units.
