Sash window restoration in Curry Rivel, Somerset
This sash window restoration project in Curry Rivel, Somerset involved the careful overhaul of original multi-pane timber sash windows in a traditional stone property. Years of paint build-up, failed sash cords, deteriorated glazing putty and areas of timber decay had left the windows difficult to operate and in need of extensive attention.
The windows were fully dismantled, with both sashes removed from their frames for detailed preparation and repair. The original timber was retained wherever possible before the windows were re-corded, rebalanced, repainted and returned to smooth working order.
The condition of the original sash windows
Before restoration, the sash windows showed heavy paint build-up, failed and broken sash cords, loose glazing putty and weathered timber. Several sashes had become painted shut or difficult to operate, while exposed areas of the frames required careful repair and preparation.
Despite their condition, the original joinery remained suitable for restoration.
Retaining and repairing the existing timber preserved the proportions, glazing bars and character of the windows rather than replacing them with modern units.
Restoring the sash windows in Curry Rivel
Each window was carefully dismantled by removing the staff beads, parting beads, sash cords and both timber sashes. This allowed every component to be inspected individually and gave full access to the box frames for preparation and repair.
Loose paint and defective material were removed before areas of timber decay were repaired and the surfaces were sanded and fine-filled. Failed glazing putty was renewed where required, followed by a full primer and top-coat system. The restored sashes were then re-corded, correctly balanced and refitted to operate smoothly while retaining the original multi-pane appearance.
